For the Love of Insects

Author: Thomas Eisner, with foreword by Edward O. Wilson

Our #1 pick of best books for anyone looking to dive into the world of entomology. It not only highlights some of the many unbelievable adaptations and superpowers of insects, but provides a wonderful look into the life of one of the modern world’s greatest entomologists and advocate for insects and spiders. He shows us just how simple yet effective insect research can be, and creates an atmosphere of scientific accessibility for all while showing you how to enjoy the journey along the way.

Endless Forms

Author: Seirian Sumner

Seirian Sumner shines a spotlight on some of nature’s most slandered and underappreciated insects: Wasps. Endless Forms provides a casual glance into the origins, diversity, behavior, and ecological importance of these beautiful creatures. If you love bees, you can love wasps. Besides, “Bees are just wasps that forgot how to hunt” anyway. So before you call a wasp any unsavory names again, read this book!

All You Need to Know About Spiders

Authors: Wolfgang Nentwig, Jutta Ansorg, Angelo Bolzern, Holger Frick, Anne-Sarah Ganske, Ambros Hänggi, Christian Kropf and Anna Stäubli

A collaborative effort between 8 scientists with the Association for the Promotion of Spider Research, this book provides a great baseline to your understanding of spider diversity, physiology, and behavior… or at the very least, a resource to help you finally shake that irrational arachnophobia! Arachnology is a discipline that sits in the shadow of an already understudied, underfunded, and underappreciated entomological universe… So pick up this book, quell your fears, and help support spider research!

Ant Encounters: Interaction Networks and Colony Behavior

Author: Deborah M Gordon

Deborah M Gordon brings us a wonderfully detailed look at social structure of ants and a fascinating explanation of chemoecologically-dictated behaviors. A wonderful academic resource for anyone who ever wondered how ants can work together so efficiently.

Silent Summer: Averting the Insect Apocalypse

Author: Dave Goulson

If you’re looking for something that exposes frustrating side of entomology and conservation, here you go. I purchased this book because I’m always trying to learn how to best explain some of the challenges we face when trying to conserve insects and the rest of the world. Doug Goulson does a great job explaining the difficulties of being a scientist in a world dominated by industry, where economic value overshadows science, and where disinformation spreads like wildfire. Thankfully he lightens things up in between chapters with fun insect facts and ends with actions we can all take to help.
